Creating Your Own Wedding Crowns

Adding a few floral pieces can transform your wedding crowns from drab to fab

DIY weddings have emerged as a growing trend in the past few years, with recent studies by Shindigz showing that brides are now opting to DIY at least one part of their weddings. Be it the cakes, the dress, or the décor, one aspect of the wedding celebration and reception is custom-made by the bride for her special day.
Thanks to the hundreds of thousands of wedding blogs and DIY boards on Pinterest, there’s now an infinite resource for brides who want to work on creating handmade crafts for their weddings. If you haven’t decided on which part of your wedding to customise, then look no further than in your own attire on your wedding day.

Now, it’s understandable for most brides to be afraid of customising their own wedding gowns, but there’s no reason to be afraid of making your own bridal accessories. Start small, like with your wedding crown. Although often left out in favour of the veil, bridal crowns are also becoming more popular thanks to the increase in the number of vintage-themed weddings being held.

If you’re holding a country-themed wedding, then beautiful flowers will look great in your bridal crown. Vintage and elegant weddings will also be a great venue for plain white flowers arranged in a wreath. Of course, the beauty of working on a DIY project is that you can use just about any colour of flowers you want when arranging your bridal crown. As Simon Richards, flower buyer and product developers for UK retail chain M&S, is quick to point out, you should always “Trust your own judgment when it comes to colour,” as any combination you like probably works.

For this project, you’ll require the following:

· A selection of your favourite flowers
· Thick florist wire
· Florist tape
· Some ribbons of your choice
· A pair of scissors or a wire cutter

If you’ve already worked with a florist to design your wedding bouquet, you can definitely use the same flowers for your bridal crown. This should allow your wedding attire to flow much more smoothly, thanks to the complimentary colours present.

First, measure the crown by bending the wire in a circular shape and fitting it around your head. Make sure that it’s tight enough to stay wrapped around your head without falling off, but not so tight it’s biting into your skin, as you’ll still need space to tie the ribbons and the flowers in.

Secure the two ends of the wreath by joining the wire ends and twisting one over the other. Twist the two ends as tightly as you can to make the wreath more secure.

Arrange the blooms on the wreath in any pattern you’d like, and secure the stems with florist wire. You can also add some foliage and leaves for a truly woodsy, natural feel.

Once you’re happy with the arrangement, you can then cover the wreath with florist tape, and some ribbon to make it more elegant.
Twist the ribbon into a bow knot in the back of the wreath to make it look pretty, even from behind.
